$20,000 MISTAKE!!! Bad DIY Waterproofing Job on a Tiled Shower Pan
All too often homeowners don't take the proper steps when waterproofing their showers for tile installation. One missed step can lead to a catastrophic failure that requires the complete removal and replacement of the shower and plumbing.
Tile Redi pans eliminate the vulnerable failure points of other shower pan systems like Schluter Kerdi, RSS, Wedi, Hydroblock and Redgard. In those systems, the pan and wall connection is at or below the waterline of the shower and are often just connected in the field with sealant or thinset. Also, the drain is a separate piece and has to be secured to the pan with thinset or sealant. Installer error is common with these systems leading to catastrophic ...

Irregular zellige tiles are a popular choice for tile walls. Ceramic or porcealain tiles the most common types. When installing these tiles, special considerations are needed: 1.) The porcelain tiles can be cupped, warped, or bowed in the middle. Backbutteri...

When you don't have access from below, whether it be from a concrete slab foundation or a second story bathroom, the drain connection for a pre fomed tiled shower pan can be tricky. If you have to use a traditional PVC or ABS cement to connect the sewer pipe it makes it even more difficult becuase the pipe cement needs to be applied before the pan goes in and it can dry up if it is not connecte...
Waterproofing Curbless Shower --- New Flo FX Membrane!!!

Tile showers that have a curbless or barrier free entrance need to have the waterproofing extended out 12" past the threahold of the shower. In my opinion, sheet membrane is better than liquid applied membrane in shower pans for a three reasons: 1.) You do not need to wait for the mortar bed to dry before applying. It can take up to a week to for a mortar bed to fully dry before you can apply l...

Water will evaoprate from the trap in a sink or shower that hasn't been used for a significant amount of time, and that would allow sewer gases to enter the dwelling.

I wonder if you can leave the marble and do tile redi in front of it. Then waterproof the seam and use marble sills to cover that portion. Do marble hexagon on the pan. Would save a ton if money. Also, use a good sealer over all the marble.

Its seems tile coach didn’t spend a lot of time trying to press the tiles to collapsing the ridges. Also coach didn’t look to use a float or board to get the tile flat to its neighbors. And last, it looks like as a result coach didn’t have squeeze out between tiles that would require cleaning later before grouting.

How do you feel about the adhesion of the thinset to the pan and walls. I'm considering moving over from traditional pvc liner showers because this just looks much faster and pretty fool proof. The only failure mode I see is inadequate adhesion or if it breaks down somehow, though that seems pretty unlikely.

  • @Thetileguy

I have used that technique years ago before I get my skills sharpened it will work way smoother is you make the notch against the wall 1/8 shorter that will make your screed action way faster also I would recommend the beginners start packing the drain and the ledger first then poor the cement that will avoid cracks along the walls and around the drain and the last tip I can share is to finish the floor nice and smooth the easer way is sprinkle some of the dry mix you use and a wood float I have different sizes but you can always cut the wood float is nice to have different sizes so works easier depending on the sloop you are building and after you can use a 6 inches metal thrower to finish off and clean the edges

Thank you for your coaching videos. I have learned a lot from them. They helped me install and tile my first shower. I am now taking on my 1/2 bath that is 30 sq ft. I have removed the tile and the deck mud down to the original concrete subfloor. It now needs to be raised 1" so the tile is level with the adjacent hardwood floor. Given the size of the area, could I put the slurry down in "sections" and work the deck mud over it as I go? I've never done this before and was wondering if there is an easier way for me to build up the floor? Even if it is more expensive, I am looking to do the job right and by myself (no helpers for this DIYer...) Again, thanks so much for the coaching....it is greatly appreciated.

What ever company installed the stone should not have installed it in first place knowing there was no water proofing in place, they literally put in a product that was destined to be torn out, any professional should know that. Maybe the stone fabricator was desperate for money who knows.

Can you do a video on the tiger Notch euro styles how they when applied ? A lot of us use it in our art for the designs of textured art and I’m curious what some of the other ones look like other than the notch and the round and the squares I would like not to have to buy a bunch of different ones to see what designs I like on the canvas, if you could do, that a lot of us are in crafters would greatly appreciate it. If you do, can you please send me the video so I’ll know that it posted.

Thank you for all the work and effort you put into your videos, tests, and tips. You are make me and the industry better! You have also inspired me to start doing my own testing and improve my efficiency. I have a question regular 😮installing waterproof membrane instalation and lapping. It seems to me it would make more sense to install the membrane on the shower floor first, then do the linear corner strips onto the floor, followed by the corner prices and finally, the shower walls. If the wall membranes were installed last, the water shed would be better. It always bothers me that the overlap invites water in if the linear strips and corners are installed last. Am I overly worried about this? Is the bond and seal of the membrane on membrane overlap so good, this is a non-issue? My other question on membrane is; when installing them on shower walls, can I use the NoFlo large sheet, start at one corner, and work the sheet into the corner without cutting it and continue on to the other walls without cutting the corners? Just thought it would prevent a lot of potential failure points and eliminate vertical corner strips. Am I missing something?
